Virtual Walk for Housing Stop # 2: East Parmenter Street Neighborhood
Location: East Parmenter St. Newburgh NY
Sponsored By: Michael N. Koumas, D.D.S., P.C.
East Parmenter Street is Habitat Newburgh’s flagship neighborhood located directly behind our main office. This street is our largest block project and was completed in 2014. It consists of 22 energy-efficient homes, complete with pocket parks. This neighborhood development was the first of its kind in a recognized historic district. When Habitat Newburgh initially began work on this project, East Parmenter St was crime-ridden and full of blighted and abandoned buildings. Many of the houses on East Parmenter were in such a state of disrepair that we had to tear them down and start from scratch! The East Parmenter development is responsible for Habitat Newburgh's Anchor Block approach to neighborhood revitalization where we aim to build infill on vacant lots, rehab existing houses, and provide community spaces in a concentrated area. This approach improves the efficiency of our builds, the visibility of our work, and the safety of our homebuyers. Our work on East Parmenter resulted in a complete metamorphosis of a blighted, crime-ridden street into a neighborhood that anyone would be proud to call home.
