TITHING
How we Support Habitat International's Global Mission
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh not only builds safe, decent, and affordable houses in the City of Newburgh but contributes to decent shelter around the world. As part of Habitat International’s greater efforts to create strength, stability, self-reliance, and shelter everywhere, all Habitat affiliates are asked to “tithe” to Habitat International each year to fund shelter building work in other nations. Habitat Newburgh contributes 10 percent of its undesignated contributions each year.
Supported by U.S. affiliate tithe, the Global Mission Fund provides critical funding for Habitat for Humanity programs outside the United States. Fund distribution is determined by Habitat for Humanity International’s senior leadership, including the area vice presidents. This funding is often used as leverage for institutional or foundational grants, to pilot innovative programs or projects, or to fill gaps in country program budgets.
One hundred percent of our tithe is sent internationally, where it can be used, for example, to upgrade informal settlements in Bangladesh and strengthen women’s savings groups for housing improvements in Malawi or help Habitat’s mission in so many other ways.
