At Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh, we know that strong women help build strong communities. This Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating two incredible women who make affordable homeownership possible— Milagros "Millie" Montijo-Flores, our amazing director of programs & services, and Millie, Habitat homeowner.

Starting Fresh: Millie Montijo Flores' Decade of Service

Sometimes, the best journeys start with curiosity. When Millie saw an opening at Habitat Newburgh, she was intrigued. “ I applied out of the belief that maybe I could work in an organization that would give my work more meaning and purpose.” Fast forward, and she’s now guiding families on their path to homeownership, proving that when passion meets purpose, amazing things happen!

Degrees & Dedication

With a Master’s in Education (MSEd.) and a real estate license in NY, Millie brings a powerhouse combination of knowledge and compassion to her role. She knows that homeownership isn’t just about bricks and mortar—it’s about financial literacy, stability, and a brighter future.

Her Advice for Future Homeowners

“Take advantage of the classes offered. Financial planning is key to being a successful homeowner.”

A Survivor’s Journey - Meet Millie, Habitat Homeowner

Originally from Puerto Rico, Millie's homeownership journey began when she found herself in a small two-bedroom condo, which became a full house when her daughter and two grandchildren moved in. “Wherever you found a pillow, that’s where you slept,” she says. Hearing about how Habitat Newburgh can partner with families to help them purchase a home, she enthusiastically worked through the program. She now has an affordable home where each grandchild has their own room. Since we know homeownership is one of the keys to academic and professional success, it's an inspiration for us to see how Mille’s grandchildren are thriving academically and pursuing their passions.

Through the Storm & Out the Other Side

Millie has spent over 25 years working at Montefiore St. Luke's Hospital, steadily climbing the ranks from clerk to Supervisor. When COVID struck, Mille worked tirelessly through the pandemic. “All I heard was the beeping of ICU machines," she says. Jumping in whenever non-clinical help was needed — she often held tablets and phones so patients could see their families, sometimes for the last time. "I was right there, listening to families in pain, grief, and desperation - it was hard, and it definitely took a toll."

Her Advice for Future Homeowners

“Believe that homeownership is a real, tangible, and achievable thing. It all starts by believing it's possible.”
